Day Trips

Tucked in between the Newell and Sturt Highways, there is an idyllic place in the Eastern Riverina of New South Wales that has managed to retain its rural Aussie character.

Welcome to the Coolamon Shire. The perfect place to spend a day (or longer!). Take a step back in time - to a more peaceful time and place… fresh air and a slower pace.

A short turn off the highway and you can be in one of the Shire’s villages enjoying lazy afternoon lunches and coffees, antique and gift stores, museums, craft outlets and boutique shopping, all in country village settings.

Your day can begin with a visit to Coolamon’s Up-to-Date Store where you will find exhibits and information about the life and history of small country towns such as Coolamon, Ganmain and Ardlethan. This unique building was  constructed in 1909 and is now part of the town's cultural and learning precinct that houses:

  • the Mavis Furner Crochet Collection of over 200 exquisite garments
  • the Garth Jones Agricultural Collection which tells a local story of life on the land from early settlement
  • an operational Lamson Ball-Style Cash Carrier, thought to be the only one of its kind in the world that is still in its original location.

While in the cultural precinct, visit the RSL Museum and be sure to pop in to the Ajanta Cafe and gift shop. Then take a stroll down the historical main street, taking in the gorgeous boutique stores and eateries, to the railway station, which has been beautifully preserved.

If time permits, take a stroll through the Kindra State Forest and enjoy the interpretive walk and bird and wildlife wacthing opportunities.

A 10-15 minute drive from Coolamon will see you arive in Ganmain. If visiting on a market day, make sure you head to the Ganmain Hall to check out some local handmade goods and produce (check the events calendar for dates).

The Ganmain Historical Museum houses a large collection of items from the region's past and is a must visit for history buffs. Enjoy a famous Ganmain Pie from the bakery and then burn it off with a leisurely stroll through the Ganmain Murumbang Interpretive Walk.

Located 45 minutes from Coolamon and Ganmain is the small town of Ardlethan. An arts and cultural hub, the town hosts a number of arts events and activities throughout the year.

Take the self-guided Ardlethan Heritage Walk and discover the history of the town and it's buildings, including its title as the 'home of the Kelpie' and its place in the discovery of the anthrax vaccine.

Beckom, Marrar and Matong

These villages are rich in history and can be easily accessed from the towns of Ardlethan, Coolamon and Ganmain. Take in their historical buildings and open spaces, or grab a traditional country pub meal at the local.

We hope to see you in Coolamon Shire very soon!
